Dr Syed graduated with distinction from Dow Medical College (DMC), Pakistan, in 2000. She began her medical career with internships in Internal Medicine and Gynaecology & Obstetrics at Civil Hospital Karachi — a 1,900-bed public hospital.
In 2001, Dr Syed moved to Kuwait, enrolling in a Master of Pathology program at Kuwait University, where she completed three semesters before emigrating to Canada in 2002. Inspired by her parents, both university professors in the UK and Pakistan, she began her teaching career as an Associate Professor at All Saints School of Medicine (ASUM) in 2006. There, she taught Pathology and Clinical Medicine to final-year medical students, mentoring them in their pursuit of medical careers in the USA and Canada.
Determined to continue her clinical journey, Dr Syed successfully completed the Medical Council of Canada and United States Medical Licensing Examinations. During her time in Canada, she also volunteered as a psychological counsellor, supporting new immigrants and refugees.
In 2008, Dr Syed joined the United States Department of Defence as a psychological subject matter expert (SME), serving in Iraq with the US Army. She led psychological support programs for prisoners of war and detainees, assisting with their mental health and reintegration into society. She also completed externships at US Army combat hospitals and volunteered with the American Red Cross. Between 2009 and 2012, Dr Syed worked in a family physician’s office in Canada while continuing her academic role at ASUM.
Since 2012, Dr Syed has been based in Australia, working as a mental health doctor and General Practitioner. She has provided services to several Adelaide-based institutions, including Modbury Hospital (Woodleigh House), NE Community Mental Health, Lyell McEwin Hospital, Northern and Eastern Community Mental Health services, and after-hours psychiatry at Glenside Hospital and the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Dr Syed brings a wealth of international experience and a compassionate, patient-centred approach to her clinical practice.
